Recording PowerPoint Presentations with Panopto Powerpoint

When it comes to recording PowerPoint presentations, Panopto is a popular software that allows you to capture and upload video content for assessment purposes. As part of the Learning, Teaching and Student Experience (LTSE) department at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), we recommend using Panopto to record your PowerPoint presentations. In this article, we will guide you through the process of recording a PowerPoint presentation with Panopto.

Before you start recording, make sure you are logged in to Panopto and have your PowerPoint presentation open in slideshow mode. To do this, follow these steps: navigate to the Panopto app on your computer or device, select 'Secondary Sources' from the left-hand menu, click on 'Open a Presentation', choose your PowerPoint file, and add any additional secondary sources if required.

It's essential to note that when you check the box for 'Capture PowerPoint Animations as unique slides,' Panopto will capture each segment of an animation as a separate slide. This means that if you have animations revealing each bullet point in your presentation, instead of seeing the animation, each bullet point will pop up in the recording instead of having the animation reveal it.

When using Panopto to record your PowerPoint presentation, make sure to select 'Capture Main Screen' rather than 'Capture PowerPoint.' This allows the presentation mode to be recorded correctly. Additionally, ensure that you have selected 'Microphone' as your audio source under the Audio tab.

If you encounter any error messages during the recording process, refer to the troubleshooting guide provided by Panopto for solutions. It's also important to note that running an empty PowerPoint presentation in Panopto will result in an error message.

Once you have completed your recording, you can upload it securely to Panopto's cloud-based storage solution and share it easily through your Canvas courses or websites. With Panopto, you can also use a camera to record your own video content and narrate your PowerPoint presentation for added visual and audio elements.
